THEATER REVIEW: MUSICAL MYTH:
Rinde Eckert is in tune with A.R.T.’s
elegant, artful ‘Orpheus X’
By JON LEHMAN

"There is another dimension to this play, and that is the
video art created by Denise Marika. Projected on a screen
and on various parts of the set (notably some enormous
steel girders) are video loops of a nude woman walking
back and forth in a maze, scrawling with chalk on a floor,
spilling red, blood-like liquid in front of her and finally
wrestling violently with an also-nude Orpheus. This silent
video accompaniment functions as a parallel channel,
amplifying the mythic content of the story.
In the real-world dimension, what is striking is how
immediate and accurate the emotions and characters
seem. The story is not merely a translation of the worn,
dimly remembered Greek myth but a series of fragmentary
dream encounters - snippets, not logically connected, from
the lives of contemporary people."
